Schools For our first school, we selected Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix. We were led to this school initially from an article in Wired Magazine. After an initial site visit to validate our intuition, we then developed the following requirements for each school we elect to sponsor:
  • It must be a public high school that ranks in the bottom quartile of all high schools in its state when measured by an array of standardized tests;
  • The school must have at least one, but preferably more than one, teacher that is truly inspired to make a difference in their student's lives. This is clearly a qualitative measurement, but we believe we know it when we see it. We can only help after high school. Students that we might otherwise like to help may not be able to make adequate use of our resources if they don't have guidance and mentorship during their high school period;
  • The school administration must be supportive of our efforts. We do not require them to do anything beyond their normal activities.
Also, we must have excess endowment funds beyond existing sponsorship needs.

While we make our commit to a school an open-ended one, it is not necessarily permanent. The maintenance of our commitment depends primarily on two things. First, we must continue to have the resources available. Second, the school needs to continue as an under performing school as we have defined it. Once a school consistently pulls itself into the performance mainstream, we believe the Fund's resources should be redirected to another school that needs our help more.

We welcome hearing from anyone wishing to suggest a school for us to consider.
